L.T. PagaraniChairman, Choithram
L.T. Pagarani heads the Choithram supermarket chain, first set up by Thakurdas Choithram Pagarani as a small grocery store in Freetown, Sierra Leone, in 1944. Within a decade, the small shop had become an extensive chain serving the local market. The brand has developed retail chains spanning Europe, North America, Africa and the Gulf countries over a period of seven decades. It opened its first Choithram supermarket and department store in the UAE in 1974, and has expanded to 27 outlets across the country today, with more projects in development under the leadership of L.T. Pagarani.
The company, now an integrated manufacturer, distributor and retailer, has also expanded into Oman, Bahrain and Qatar. Its presence in all corners of the Gulf has contributed to remarkable growth, and Pagarani is seen as the driving force behind the group's expansion and success. While Choithram and Sons funds and manages hospitals, schools and humanitarian initiatives in India and West Africa, it also actively supports the Dubai Government in green initiatives. It seeks to educate people about reducing waste, recycling practices, and the reduction of the country's carbon footprint.
The company promotes the use of reusable jute bags imported from India, and is a leading sponsor of water conservation programmes. It also enjoys a long association with the World Wildlife Fund in the UAE as a founding sponsor. LT Pagarani, Chairman of Choithrams, has won the Retail CEO of the Year Award at this year’s Arabian Business Indian CEO Awards in February 2013.
